Spring Event 4/27/17:   Dr. Ruth Potee on “The Developing Brain and Addiction”

Special THANKS to St. Gabriel's Church of Marion and Marion Public Health Nurse, Kathy Downey for their hard work and for coordinating the event.  Photos   - VIDEO  - Presentation slides (no audio)
The Healthy Tri-Town Coalition, in conjunction with St. Gabriel's Church, hosted renowned speaker, Dr. Ruth Potee who presented “The Developing Brain and Addiction,” Thursday, April 27th at the Old Rochester Regional High School Auditorium. (See other presentations here or here.)

Dr. Potee is one of the state’s foremost experts in the physiology of addiction and the teenage brain. This presentation will help us to understand how addictions develop and how young brains are particularly susceptible. Whether to nicotine, sugar, video games, caffeine, risky behaviors, alcohol, or drugs, understanding how addiction “re-wires” the reward pathways in the brain, especially when it is still developing, gives us a better understanding of who is at risk, how to prevent, and how to treat addiction. The presentation will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Potee and local public health professionals.
We feel that this is an extremely important offering for parents of students of all ages, preschool through senior year, in understanding how to protect young people from addiction.  We highly encourage students to attend the presentation with their parents. This event is free and open to all members of the community. Refreshments will be available.

Seeking to empower students with resistance skills and training, the South Coast Health System awarded $3,000 to further their relational violence prevention plan. Police chiefs of Mattapoisett and Rochester wrote letters of support of their grant application.  We are grateful to Chief  Lyons and McGee and their belief in the program! Sippican educators have participated in a five-day RAD Kids training and 2 high school physical educators will be able to attend the National R.A.D. conference this summer. "Join us at the Knights of Columbus Hall for a very special FREE screening of The Connection (watch the trailer).

"At 24 years old filmmaker Shannon Harvey was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. Her immune system had become hyperactive and was attacking normal, healthy tissues. Her muscles and joints were inflamed and she was told if her disease progressed she could end up with organ failure, or wheelchair bound.
"In search of a cure, Shannon tried everything from drugs to alternative therapies and everything in between. But she was still sick. There was one thing she did know. When she was stressed, she got worse and with a background in journalism, Shannon sought answers in pioneering science. On her journey to getting better, Shannon realized that in order to change her health she needed to change her mind.
"The Connection is a film about how frontier research is proving that there is a direct connection between your mind and your health."

NEW BEDFORD – The Physicians to Prevent Opioid Abuse (PPOA) and Nurses to Prevent Opioid Abuse (NPOA) in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater New Bedford/Wareham to host a viewing of “If Only,” a short film co-written and produced by James Wahlberg, on May 26 at the club on 166 Jenney Street, New Bedford at 6:30 p.m. The film was created to initiate a meaningful dialogue between parents and children, and within communities, about prescription drug misuse and opiate addiction.

DST (Drug Story Theater, Inc.)
5/16/16: A serious message finds its best voice in the young people who've lived It

On Monday, May 16th, 2016, The Healthy Tri-Town Coalition presented a free public performance of Drug Story Theater, Inc.'s "The Price You Pay" at the Old Rochester Regional High School.    Hosted by Principal Mike Devoll, coordinated by Aimee Fox (Secretary to the Principal) and facilitated by ORR Health Educator, Mike Jenkins, the young actors (actual teens in recovery from addiction) portrayed powerful realistic situations between teens and their parents... and each other. After the play, the entire cast sat on the stage for a frank Q & A, or "Talk Back," with audience members. The Talk back discussion added to the audience's understanding of the topic and appreciation for the very real people who lived this.
DST has geared its work toward middle and high school students and their families who definitely benefit from an increased knowledge and perspective regarding adolescent addiction.
The Office of the District Attorney, Timothy J. Cruz, sponsored this performance for the students, families, and community of the Tri-Town area and we thank Atty. Cruz's office for their support.

Local newspaper, "Sippican Week" reported on this event. Our thanks to Georgia Sparling for attending and writing this insightful piece.
